If you've been putting off learning AI because typing questions feels like work, here's the shortcut: modern AI apps can see. Photograph anything confusing, add a one-line question, and get a plain-English answer. It works on paperwork, products, plants, appliances — anything you can point a camera at.
How to do it (30 seconds)
Open the ChatGPT or Google Gemini app
Both are free. Both work the same way for this.
Tap the camera or + icon next to the message box
Take a photo right there, or attach one from your gallery.
Type (or say) one short question
That’s it. "What is this?" genuinely works.
Seven everyday uses
1. The confusing official letter. Council rates notice, insurance renewal, a letter dense with legalese.
Explain this letter in plain English. What is it actually saying, and is there anything I need to do or pay, and by when?
2. The form you don't know how to fill in.
Walk me through filling in this form, field by field. Flag any fields where people commonly make mistakes.
3. The appliance with mystery buttons. Washing machine symbols, thermostat settings, the dishwasher's seven cycles.
What do these settings mean, and which one should I use for everyday loads?
4. The plant that's dying (or the weed that's thriving).
What plant is this, what's wrong with it, and what should I do this week to help it?
5. The food label with 40 ingredients.
My child is allergic to dairy and tree nuts. Does anything in this ingredient list contain or commonly hide those? List anything I should double-check with the manufacturer.
6. The handwriting you can't read. Old family recipes, a doctor's note, grandma's letters.
Transcribe this handwriting as accurately as you can. Mark any words you're unsure about with a question mark.
7. The thing that needs fixing. A dripping tap, a cracked tile, flat-pack furniture mid-disaster.
What's the likely problem here, can a beginner fix it, and if so what exactly do I need from the hardware shop?
Sensible limits:
• For allergies, medication or anything medical, treat the AI's answer as a first read, not a final one — confirm with the packaging, a pharmacist, or your doctor.
• Don't photograph documents with account numbers, passwords or other people's private details.
• AI can misread photos. If money or safety depends on it, verify.
Why this is the best starting point
Photo questions remove the two things that stop beginners: not knowing what to type, and not knowing where to start. The camera does the describing for you. Master this one habit and you'll naturally graduate to everything else AI can do.
